Part I)
Choosing CSU was quite the process for me. About this time last year, I applied to three schools here in Colorado. I applied to the University of Denver, Colorado School of Mines, and of course Colorado State University. All three schools sent me an acceptance letter. I had to make a tough choice between three great schools. After touring all three, my favorite was CSU. The campus here is very pleasant and it suits my personality. My brother, who is one year older than me is also attending CSU. This university seems to be the perfect fit for me.
I chose to be a business major for a couple reasons. The way a business runs appeals to me. Anyone can start their own, unique business. I also took a two different business courses at my high school. I excelled in both and really enjoyed them. Business majors can be creative and innovative. I love the creative aspect of the COB.
I do know one person in my Intro to Business class here at CSU. He and I are both living in Newsom Hall on the south end of Campus. He lives just one floor above me so I occasionally bump into him.
The only faculty members I know in the College of Business for the time being are Dr. Susan Athey and Candace Ryder. Dr. Athey is my Introduction to Business instructor and Candace is my Business Computing Concepts teacher. I am sure I will be meeting many more faculty members in the upcoming weeks.
Currently I am not interested in studying abroad. I am putting all of my time and energy into my current semester here. At some point in the future I would love to travel to another country, however the studying abroad program does not seem like the right thing for me. I am content being here in Ft. Collins.
I now realize being a business major means I should know what is currently happening in the world of business. I have heard of the publication, Business Week but I do not read it. Fortune and Forbes I too have heard of, but again I do not keep up on them. I have not heard of The Economist, or BBC. The Denver Post I do occasionally read but not consistently. I have never heard of Forbes Small Business either. However, I have heard of the Wall Street Journal but I do not read it.
I do not have many questions about CSU, but I do have a couple questions about the College of Business and being successful in college. How does this College of Business compare to others in Colorado and in the U.S.A.? What is the best way to get organized and complete efficient work on time?
Part II)
When I think of what I am good at, my first thought is math. I have always enjoyed all kinds of math ever since elementary school. It is my favorite subject probably because I am best at it. This will play a huge roll when I finally choose a concentration in the COB. This is because some concentrations depend more on math than others. One of my weaknesses is writing. My writing skills are not as good as I would like them to be, but I try my hardest. This also will influence my decision on choosing a concentration.
The Six Concentrations…
Accounting- This subject is very appealing to me. As I mentioned above, math is one of my strengths and I know this would come in handy for accounting. I am really taking this concentration into consideration for my future here at CSU. I do not know very much about accounting and I am really excited to learn more. I am very interested in accounting.
Management- I love to create my own work and ideas so business management sounds great as far as I know. Again, I am ready to learn more of this concentration so I can make a decision. Managing a business gives creative freedom which is what I want. It is almost like an art form. Art classes have always been one of my favorites as well so management might be the way to go.
Marketing- As of right now, marketing is also one of my options. I do enjoy graphic design immensely. It was my favorite class I took in high school and I know that it would correlate with this concentration. Learning more about marketing would be great and I can’t wait until I do. Creativity is also a part of marketing.
Computer Information Systems- This concentration does not appeal to me. I do not enjoy being on a computer for extended periods of time. I do not think I would be any good at this either. I have never understood computers very well. This concentration just does not seem interesting to me.
Finance- I am very interested in finance. Money is fascinating and I would love to learn more on this subject. I could easily see myself concentrating in finance in the future. I am sure math would come in handy if I chose finance. This is not a creative subject but I do know finance can be complex and confusing.
Real Estate- I have not thought about real estate much. The idea of it does not seem enjoyable to me. Real estate is not creative enough for me. I do not see myself being happy if I was in real estate. I am not already throwing this option out but I would like to learn more so I know I am not interested.
ISFJ are the four letters that describe me. The careers I might be interested in according to the Myers-Briggs Self Assessment are interior decorators, nurses, designers, administrators, managers, assistants, child care/ early childhood development, social work/ counselors/ paralegals, clergy/ religious workers, office managers, shopkeepers, bookkeepers, and home economics.
These careers all seem way off of what I was thinking. I want to be involved in business accounting, finance, management, and marketing. The only careers that are consistent in my head and the assessment are managers and office managers. It is funny to see how I am described by an assessment. The internet states that ISFJs are quiet, kind, and conscientious. This is accurate in describing my personality but it does not reflect me in possible occupations. This did not really give me any help in what concentration to choose.
I am still interested in the same concentrations as I was prior to taking the test. This assessment did surprise me because its description is perfect. The results say that I can be depended on to follow through and I usually put the needs of others above my own needs. I think this describes me very well.
